How to Stay Informed Without Feeling Overwhelmed by the News

With digital media always at our fingertips and a 24/7 news cycle, staying informed can be a delicate balance. We want to keep up with what’s happening in the world, but the nonstop stream of opinions, headlines, and breaking news can easily become overwhelming—leading to stress, anxiety, and even burnout.

So, where’s the balance? How do we stay engaged without getting swallowed by the negativity or the need to justify, argue, or react to everything we see?

The good news: It’s possible to be an informed citizen while also protecting your peace. Here’s how to manage your news intake in a way that empowers rather than overwhelms.

1. Curate Your News Sources Intentionally

Not all news is created equal. Instead of consuming information from every direction, choose a handful of reliable sources that present facts without sensationalism.

• Opt for quality over quantity. Trusted publications with a track record of integrity will give you a clearer picture without unnecessary drama.

• Consider diverse perspectives, but avoid outlets that thrive on outrage or divisiveness.

• If social media is your main source of news, follow accounts that focus on thoughtful reporting rather than reactionary content.

2. Set Boundaries Around Your News Intake

News is designed to be addictive—there’s always a new update, a fresh debate, or an unfolding crisis. But just like with social media, setting limits can make all the difference.

• Schedule your news check-ins. Instead of mindlessly scrolling throughout the day, set a designated time to catch up—maybe once in the morning and once in the evening.

• Avoid doomscrolling before bed. Late-night news consumption can heighten stress and disrupt sleep. Instead, wind down with a book, music, or a relaxing routine.

• Mute unnecessary notifications. Breaking news alerts can make everything feel urgent, even when it’s not. Limit them to truly essential updates.

3. Recognize When News Turns Into Noise

There’s a point where staying informed stops being productive and starts becoming overwhelming. If you notice that:

• You feel anxious, helpless, or angry after reading the news

• You’re obsessively checking updates with no real benefit

• You’re arguing more often about current events

…it might be time to step back. Being informed should empower you, not drain you.

4. Focus on What You Can Control

Much of what happens in the world is out of our hands, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless. Instead of fixating on problems you can’t solve alone, shift your energy to what you can do.

Take local action. Small changes in your community can have a big impact. Volunteer, donate, or support causes that align with your values.

Engage in solution-based media. Seek out content that highlights progress, innovation, and positive change—not just problems.

Use your voice wisely. If you feel called to speak out, do so thoughtfully and constructively rather than getting stuck in unproductive debates.

5. Prioritize Your Well-Being

When news consumption starts to weigh you down, give yourself permission to disconnect. Your mental and emotional health is more important.

Practice mindfulness. Whether it’s meditation, deep breathing, or simply taking a walk outside, small moments of presence can help you stay grounded.

Engage in uplifting activities. Balance heavy news with things that bring you joy—reading, music, exercise, art, or connecting with loved ones.

Remind yourself: The world is not just headlines. There is kindness, beauty, and progress happening every day. Make space for good

Stay Informed, Stay Empowered

The news doesn’t have to control your mood or mindset. By being intentional with how, when, and why you consume information, you can stay engaged with the world without losing yourself in it.

Stay informed. Stay mindful. And most importantly—stay hopeful!
