Here’s the Details of the Eclipse:

1. Duration: The total solar eclipse is expected to last for approximately 4 minutes and 28 seconds along its path of totality, but this varies and may be shortened to only a minute or so depending where you’re at. There are different phases to the event, starting when the moon begins to cross in front of the sun – you should not remove your eclipse glasses until the Moon has completely covered the Sun, the phase called “totality.”  It’s expected to start in Canada around 2 pm EST. The sun will be fully eclipsed at approximately 3:18 pm and will last for approximately three minutes. Note- you must be located within the 115-mile-wide path of totality to see the full eclipse. (Other areas will see this as a partial eclipse).

2. Path of Totality: The path of totality will stretch from the Pacific coast of Mexico, traversing through the United States, including states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, before crossing into Canada‘s Maritime provinces.

3. Visibility: While areas within the path of totality will experience complete darkness as the moon completely covers the sun, regions outside this path will witness a partial eclipse, where the sun appears as a crescent.

4. BE SAFE: It’s crucial to observe solar eclipses safely to protect your eyes from harmful radiation and damage. Specialized solar viewing glasses or solar filters for telescopes and binoculars are essential to prevent eye damage while witnessing the eclipse. The next total solar eclipse will happen on August 16, 2026, however the next visible one from the Northern hemisphere in the US and Canada won’t be until August 23, 2044.
